good morning to both of you. >> good morning. >> ron, is mitt romney trying to move more to the center? what does his statement mean? >> first of all, mitt romney is going to be a pro life president and his campaign is saying he will have a pro life agenda. in that same interview with the des moines register, he said he would reinstitute the mexico city policy, which would end federal funding for abortions overseas in other countries. right now he's talking about what voters care about, which is jobs, the economy, rising deficits. >> i understand. hang on. hang on. hang on. ron, we're not going to do talking points here. i'm asking you a very simple question. >> i'm not doing talking points. >> i didn't ask you about the economy. we can get to that. what did he mean in his statement that seems to be contradictory statements? >> i just told you what he meant. he said that his agenda is not going to be focused on abortion. it's going to be -- he did not say it was going to be focused on other issues, but obviously it's going to be. that's why he talked about the economy, what voters care

it will be interesting to see what they do over the next several days with both the vice presidential debate coming up and the second presidential debate coming up. one of the thing that is the romney campaign has miscalculated is their definition of presidential -- they have seen this as aggressive and showing strong and might where presidential also means having temperance. having poise and having patience. that's what you saw previously not being applied with the benghazi situation before. let's see if they do it now because this is one of the first times last wednesday that governor romney looked presidential at a time where president obama did not. now, with these issues and the new details coming out, it looks even worse for the administration. and if governor romney and his campaign can take a step back d look presidential in a more holistic way, not only show the strengths in some of the tough talk they have been doing, but show poise and temperature rans with their approach as the details come out, i think it can play well for them and can go very well for them going into the

i do know that focus groups, both romney campaign ran and the obama campaign ran showed these remarks really alienated independent voters and even weak republicans. which indicates to me that this comes up again in the debate and advertising, it will remind people. they forgot about it or responding to the debate. host: let's go to phone calls. barb, democratic caller you're on the air. caller: i would like to say that romney expressed his real feeling about the 47%. it cannot be ignored. also understand that he signed grover norquist pledge. if he did that, he cannot represent 100% of the population because if you say that you're going to ignore the situation that the country is in, you cannot say that you unequivocally ignore taxes and to get income to support the country. with that, he could not represent me and the middle class and or poor people. host: we'll leave it there. john in north carolina, tweets in this though. the 53% are not in the least offended by the comment which was by and large true. guest: everyone has their right to their opinion here. the poll showed that actu

what does this poll tell us about how americans are struggling with the balance between leadership, both unilateralism, intervention, non-intervention, as they continue to feel priorities are here at home? >> is the right question because i think struggling with ambivalence, tension, contradiction is the heart of the matter, and let me try to unpack that. i will offer a broad generalization about the state of american public opinions on these questions, and then i will and with some -- end with some brief comments. let me make a technical holding know, that this is a survey of adults, not a survey of registered voters, that alone white -- likely voters. there are some differences as you impose increasingly demanding screens on adults, and these results will probably pick up more young people, more people who are more weekly connected to the political system, and in this election year, i think that difference between adults and voters may be meaningful. ok, now on to the main event. first of all, how would i characterize the overall public reaction to the arab spring and its aftermath as
